| Emotional Arithmetic tells the story of three people who formed a bond in Drancy concentration camp during World War II. The three are Jakob Bronski (Sydow) who saw goodness in two orphaned children in the camp. They are Melanie (Sarandon) and Christopher (Byrne). Emotional wounds affect their lives in different ways after they are released from Drancy. Years past, and Melanie now in her 50's is married to David Winters (Plummer). Jakob is a senior citizen recently released from a Russian psychiatric hospital and Christopher is a etymologist living in Paris. The three are reunited at Melanie and David's farm in Quebec. The film portrays their various states of bitterness, jealousy and love as the characters struggle to face the past and move on.
